I recently discovered the Clive board book series by Jessica Spanyol and I’m completely captivated by it.
Each story follows Clive and his friends as they explore various role-playing activities. In one story, Clive is a waiter. He seats his guests, shows them his hand-made menu, brings their food on the cart, and even deals with customer complaints. Each story depicts the interactions between children in realistic and sometimes humorous ways. The stories include an inclusive cast of Clive’s playmates and are free of gender stereotypes.
The babies I care for at the University of St. Thomas Child Development Center have also become fans of this book series. One child in my group often hands me a book saying, “Clive” whenever he wants it read to him. Babies have very discerning taste in books. I know when I’ve brought in one they love, it’s a keeper.
